Share of voice
Your mentions as a share of all tracked-brand mentions across AI answers, and how to read it against visibility.
The definition
Share of voice is your brand's mentions as a share of all brand and competitor mentions across your tracked AI answers.
If the answers in a scan mention brands 200 times in total and 30 of those are you, your share of voice is 15%. That is the whole formula. Because every brand's share comes out of the same pool, all tracked brands' shares sum to 100%, which makes this the metric that behaves most like a market.
Zero sum, by design
Share of voice can fall while your mention count rises, if competitors' mentions rose faster. That is not a bug; it is the point. It measures your slice of the conversation, not the size of your slice in isolation.
The Overview stat strip pairs your share with your top competitor's share for exactly this reason: your share falling while theirs rises is a different story than everyone's share diluting as new brands enter the answers.
Share of voice vs visibility
The two metrics are deliberately different lenses:
| Share of voice | AI Visibility | |
|---|---|---|
| Measures | Your slice of all mentions | Coverage plus strength vs the median competitor |
| Moves when | Anyone's mention count changes | Your coverage or relative strength changes |
| Best for | Competitive tracking | Overall standing and progress |
A common pattern: visibility rises while share of voice stays flat. That usually means you entered new answers (coverage up) while competitors also grew. You are doing better in a market that is getting louder.
Where it appears
- The Overview stat strip, with your mention count and your top competitor's share.
- The Competitors leaderboard, for every brand.
- Each prompt row on the Prompts page, as your share of mentions for that single question.
Using it well
- Watch the top competitor pairing. Your share flat while theirs climbs means they are taking someone else's share now, and yours next.
- Drill into prompt-level share. A healthy overall share can hide a handful of high-demand prompts where you are being drowned out.
- Read the answers when share moves. A share drop has a specific cause in specific answers, and the answer log will show you which brands took the mentions.
